Storytelling always comes down to the hero's struggle. It may focus on a driver needing a repair, a mechanic fixing a problem or an auto shop owner trying to keep the family business afloat.

When you boil it down, there are characters and their quests. But behind those narrative techniques, you find systems.

Writing about systems

Within each industry, you can discover champions who have mastered ways to maximize their energy and their time. Their secret weapon is systemically doing the same, right things to produce consistent results.

They stop, analyze and recommit to things that work. Often, they will share their insights to help others – if they can get the words out of their heads.

For years, my work has focused on breaking down systems and/or explaining why they work. It takes time and talent to pull on the threads to weave that type of story.

Systems in skilled trades

When my father signed my siblings and I up for shop classes, we had no idea the gift he was giving to each of us. We learned how to assess a problem and find a solution, then apply it in steps done in the right order.

These insights helped me work with countless talented people who work in the trades, such as automotive, agricultural, mining and manufacturing. They focus on the output but cannot always sort out how to market what they do.

Together, we work out the benefits and find the right words to explain technical issues to a broader audience. It feels like a light goes on when you find the proper balance between highlighting their expertise and make it clear to regular readers.

Follow the money

Every business has its jargon and its mentors, but it all comes down to dollars and cents. That's why having a writer with a head for business also adds value to the equation.

First of all, I'm willing to ask the right questions about a business person's finances so it's not intrusive. Instead, we can collaborate to highlight where you're winning and why.

Having written about banking systems, real estate, investing and estate planning, I understand the language and the implications of each of these types of decisions. Heck, I've lived through each one of them too.

Financial systems take a special touch to explain them in a way that is engaging and illuminating. Too many people fear these types of conversations, since they were raised to not talk about money, death and taxes.

Fortunately, my family was more candid and pragmatic. This has led to a comfort level that few writers have. Additionally, it pays off for clients who want to explain their systems and how they can help others.

Let's work together to help everyone succeed by making the right moves. It all starts with the right words.
